# Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

> Optimize your Members Portal for search engines to help potential customers discover your coworking space online

## What is SEO Pre-rendering?

When search engine bots (like Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo) visit your Members Portal, they receive a specially pre-rendered version of each page that includes:

* **Meta tags** — Title and description that appear in search results
* **Open Graph data** — Rich preview cards when shared on social media
* **Structured data (JSON-LD)** — Machine-readable information about your location, opening hours, and services
* **Navigation links** — Links to all your public pages to help crawlers discover your content

This pre-rendered content ensures search engines can properly index your site and display it attractively in search results, even though your Members Portal is a dynamic web application.

<Note>
  SEO pre-rendering is automatically enabled for all Members Portal Version 5 locations. No additional setup is required.
</Note>

## Configuring SEO Settings

Navigate to **Settings > Features > Website > SEO** to configure how your portal appears in search engines.

<Info>
  The SEO tab is only available for locations running Members Portal Version 5.
</Info>

### Home Page Content

The settings you configure for your home page directly affect what search engines display in search results:

#### Banner & Claims

| Setting                  | Impact on SEO                                                             | Tip                                                                        |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Banner main text** | Used as the primary headline in search result titles and Open Graph cards | Use `{"{0}"}` to insert your location name (e.g., "Welcome to `{"{0}"}` ") |
| **Banner small text** | Appears as the subtitle in search results after a dash | Keep concise — this is often the first thing people read |
| **Primary claim text** | Displayed as a prominent section heading in crawler content | Summarize your main value proposition |
| **Secondary claim text** | Shown in the footer area of pre-rendered content | Good place for a call-to-action |

<Tip>
  Search engines give more weight to text that appears higher on the page. Put your most important keywords in the banner text and primary claim.
</Tip>

#### Services Section

When you enable services on your home page, each service adds a bullet point to the pre-rendered content that search engines see:

* **Workspace service** — Describe your hot desks, dedicated desks, and workspace offerings
* **Bookings service** — Highlight meeting rooms, event spaces, and bookable resources
* **Community service** — Promote your networking events, community perks, and member benefits

Each service has a **short text** (used as the label) and **long text** (used as the description). Both appear in search engine content.

### Features Visible to Search Engines

The features you enable in **Settings > Features > Website > Features** directly affect what search engines index:

* Enabled features appear in a "What We Offer" list in search results
* They influence your meta description (the snippet shown below your title)
* Each feature gets a clickable link in the navigation section

**Enabled features currently visible to crawlers:**

* Events
* Blog
* Room Bookings
* Member Directory
* Discussion Board
* Contact
* Book a Tour
* Online Sign Up
* Mail & Deliveries
* Visitor Management

<Warning>
  Disabling a feature in Settings > Features will remove it from your SEO content and may affect your search rankings for that feature.
</Warning>

### Social Links

Social network links you configure in **Settings > Features > Website > Footer** are included in structured data served to search engines.

| Platform | How It Helps SEO |
| ----------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| X (Twitter) | Appears in your Google Knowledge Panel |
| Facebook | Helps Google associate your social presence with your location |
| Instagram   | Included in `sameAs` schema.org property for brand validation  |

These links help search engines understand that your social media accounts belong to your coworking space, which can improve your overall online presence.

### Location Information

The following location details from **Settings > General settings > Contact & location details** are used in structured data:

| Field                  | SEO Impact                                                        |
| ---------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Location name**      | Used in schema.org `name` property                                |
| **Short introduction** | Primary meta description (fallback to About Us if empty) |
| **Address** | Included in schema.org PostalAddress and visible on Google Maps |
| **Phone** | Shown in search results and schema.org telephone property |
| **Contact email** | Included in contact page meta tags |
| **Coordinates** | Used for GeoCoordinates schema to improve local search visibility |

<Tip>
  Fill in all location information fields completely. Search engines use this data to show your location in local search results and map listings.
</Tip>

### Page-Specific Settings

Some feature settings affect how individual pages appear in search results:

#### Contact Page

* **Enable enquiry form** — When enabled, search engines see that you offer a contact form
* **Enable tour booking** — Mentions tour booking in contact page SEO content

#### Events

* **Allow ticket cancellation** — Events page mentions free cancellation in search results

#### Blog

* **Allow comments** — Blog page mentions open comments in search results

#### Reservations

* **Allow guest bookings** — Booking pages mention "no membership required"
* **Allow recurring bookings** — Booking pages mention recurring options

#### Sign-Up

* **Google sign-in** / **Facebook sign-in** — Sign-up page mentions social sign-up options

## Navigation Links for Crawlers

Your Members Portal automatically generates navigation links in the pre-rendered content to help search engines discover all your public pages:

### Home Page Navigation

The home page includes an "Explore" section with links to:

* Sign Up (if online sign-up is enabled)
* Book a Tour (if tours are enabled)
* Contact Us (if contact page is enabled)
* Events (if events are enabled)
* Blog (if blog is enabled)
* FAQ (if FAQs are publicly accessible)
* Book (Resource Type) — one link per enabled resource type (meeting rooms, hot desks, private offices, etc.)

### Cross-Links Between Pages

To help crawlers navigate your site, pages include relevant cross-links:

**Contact Page** → Sign Up, Book a Tour, FAQ

**Sign-Up Page** → All bookable resource types, Book a Tour, Contact Us

**Booking Pages** → Sign Up, Book a Tour, Contact Us, Other resource types

This internal linking helps search engines understand your site structure and improves the likelihood that all your pages are indexed.

## FAQ Page Optimization

If you've configured FAQs (**Settings > Features > Website > Access > FAQs**), your FAQ page includes structured data with the `FAQPage` schema type.

<Note>
  FAQ pages only appear in search results if Access is set to **Public**. Other access levels (Logged in users, Members only) prevent search engines from seeing the content.
</Note>

When properly configured, FAQ pages can appear as rich results in Google, showing questions and answers directly in search results.

## Best Practices

### Write for Humans First

While it's important to include relevant keywords, write naturally for your potential customers. Search engines prioritize content that provides value to readers.

### Keep Descriptions Concise

* **Meta title**: 50-60 characters
* **Meta description**: 150-160 characters
* **Home page short introduction**: 140 characters maximum

Longer text will be truncated in search results.

### Use Descriptive Text for Services

Instead of generic text like "We offer workspace," write specific descriptions:

✅ **Good**: "Flexible hot desks in a vibrant open-plan area with high-speed WiFi and unlimited coffee"

❌ **Avoid**: "Workspace available"

### Update Content Regularly

Search engines favor sites with fresh content. Regularly publish:

* Blog articles about your community, industry insights, or space updates
* New events to keep your events page active
* Updates to your About Us section

### Monitor Your Search Presence

Use [Google Search Console](https://search.google.com/search-console) to:

* See which pages are indexed
* Monitor search performance
* Identify and fix crawl errors

## Verifying Your SEO Setup

To verify your SEO configuration is working:

1. **View Source in Browser**\
   Visit your Members Portal in a private browsing window, right-click, and select "View Page Source." Search for `<meta name="description"` to see your meta tags.

2. **Test Rich Results**\
   Use [Google's Rich Results Test](https://search.google.com/test/rich-results) to validate your structured data.

3. **Check Open Graph**\
   Paste your portal URL into [Facebook's Sharing Debugger](https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/) to see how your page appears when shared.
